The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

Tonight Kristen and I watched Julian Schnabel's The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. It was long overdue. The film had a sneak preview member viewing at the ICA a few months ago. My shift ended an hour before Schnabel arrived to introduce his film. At the time I was not star struck enough to attempt to be an "usher". Fast forward to present day: we loved it. The whole I laughed, I cried thing rolled into a self-reflective journey of stillness. It even satisfied Kristen's appetite for French things and completed my perfect Happy Birthday evening. We recommend it. Jean-Dominique Bauby is our hero.

Headlines

For the past three months my front desk friends and I have taken part in a piece by conceptual artist, Tino Sehgal. The piece is called This is New and was somewhat "performed" when visitors purchased tickets. The instructions we were verbally given (Tino doesn't like things in writing) are as follows:

Step 1: business as usual, collect the money, print the ticket. Step 2: As you pass the ticket to the visitor say a news headline from the current day. Step 3: If they walk away, the interaction is over. If they say "what?" repeat the headline and add "This is New, Tino Sehgal 2003". If they ask about the content of the headline you may discuss it however you see fit.

My ICA friends and I saw this experience as somewhat of an annoying challenge. We did not ask to do this. We were "persuaded" to participate. It has been the source of both laughter and complaints...at times even outrage. We can now breathe a little easier since the show is no longer here. On a positive note, it was a good excuse to browse CNN and the New York Times in the morning. In any case we have endured. Below is a list of headlines I have stated.

“Michelle Obama Touts Husband”
“Blogtalk: S.C. and Florida”
“Edwards Drops Out”
“Democrats Change Tone”
“Phil Says Six More Weeks of Winter”
“Super Bowl vs. Super Tuesday”
“Counting Delegates”
“Mukasey Won’t Investigate Waterboarding”
“Majoring and Minoring in Theater”
“The Vanishing Establishment”
“The Early Word: The Count”
“Center Stage Wisconsin”
“Conflict on the Menu”
“A Different Recollection”
“The Charisma Mandate”
“An Oscar’s Crystal Ball”
“Preparing for the Oscars”
“New Harmonies”
“Super Delegates Defect”
“Voter Turnout in Texas”
“Rhetoric High, Anxiety Low”
“The Border and the Ballot Box”
“Crime Down in ‘08”
“A Predictable Ride”
“Design and the Elastic Mind”
“Fashion Sees It’s Shadow”
“A Sand Dollar Riddle”
“Storm Damages Downtown Atlanta”
“Up and Running in Space”
“Towels Go Green”
“Richardson Endorses Obama”
“The Fuzzier Crystal Ball”
“A Chocolaty Buzz”
“Room on the Bus”
“Krazy Glue Moment” (yes with a k)
“Clams in Sherry”
“Battle for Hearts and Minds”
“Seeing the Light”

Old Camera, New Camera

It's sad to say it but my first digital camera has bit the dust. I was in denial for a short while...but over the past few days I have found the strength to move on. I have ordered a sleek and shiny new 7.1 mp Canon. It should be arriving some time tomorrow. This will be quite an upgrade from my 3.2 mp. With this new arrival I remember my dear old friend. It was there with me in good times and bad. It has seen multiple dorm rooms, family gatherings and parties. It has perched upon Roman bridges and rested upon a stony beach of Collioure. It has even captured a distant Barack Obama within a few pixels. My old friend has been good to me. The memories remain.

Political Nerd

So I found this fun little "what if" tool on the CNN website. It's the Democratic Delegate Counter Game. I realized that Obama can get to 2025 even if Hillary wins by 20 delegates in Pennsylvania. Considering he normally does well in the south and northwest, it looks promising.

You can play too:
